Below are 23 Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
What is mentoring?
In general, Mentoring is a supportive relationship between a trusted adviser (Mentor) and an individual (Mentee) seeking guidance during various stages along their development journey. The mentor has usually gathered broad business experience and knowledge throughout their career and is open to sharing this with others in a mutually agreed way.
The term Mentor comes from an epic Greek poem in Homer’s ‘Odyssey’ – the King asked his friend Mentor, to be a trusted advisor to his son while he was away. We all need guides in our lives to safely seek guidance and support.

Is mentoring the same as coaching?
There are similarities, and also some slight differences. Both mentoring and coaching involves working with an individual (Mentee) one on one to provide guidance and support.
Coaches are often engaged for their specialised knowledge and skill in a specific area. For example, you want to be an Olympic athlete and engage a coach to refine your technique and improve your performance to win a gold medal. A Mentor may help an athlete understand what it is like to compete at the Olympics, how to deal with the distress and the distractions etc. They are different roles, each add unique value, can be delivered by the same person and are focused on helping the athlete achieve the gold medal.
Mentors and coaches are both useful means of support, depending on your situation. The TLM team are very experienced in a wide range of individual specialisations, utilise a blend of coaching and mentoring techniques and are ready and willing to help you as required.
Each case is assessed independently. If you would like support please contact us today

How are Mentors matched with Mentees selected?
Firstly, we carefully select Mentors and only choose those with substantial real-world business experience, across diverse industries, sectors and have covered many disciplines, roles and portfolios.
Mentors are vetted and then carefully matched on multiple levels to ensure they can provide the appropriate support, experience and guidance, required by you (Mentee).
What if I want to change Mentors, can I?
After your initial meeting if you don’t feel you and your Mentor are a good match, we will review and evaluate before re-matching. In the same instance, if the Mentor doesn’t feel they can best serve your needs we will rematch accordingly.
Where does my mentoring / coaching session take place?
Your Mentor will be in touch to introduce themselves and organise a mutually convenient date, time and place to meet. This work can obviously be done virtually if required.
TLM has offices in the city that are private where mentoring sessions are held. For interstate and overseas clients, sessions are conducted online or by phone. Many of our Mentors travel as part of their other roles and can organise face to face meetings with mentees while interstate.
During COVID 19 all mentoring sessions are conducted using an online platform (Zoom and Teams) and will remain this way until government restrictions ease.
How does the mentoring process work?
The Leaders Mentor Program is not delivered in one set way. Each Mentee comes to us with a different need that usually requires a tailored approach. Each mentoring relationship is unique, however the process and framework we use is consistent.
The Mentor and Mentee work together to set goals, objectives and agree on expected outcomes, including how to work together to maximise the mentoring relationship.
The program doesn’t always focus on the development of hard teachable skills (defined or measured), instead, Mentors facilitate a process that helps Mentees identify the path needed to reach their goal and stay motivated.
At times we will ‘coach’ you (Mentee) through a specific project or process. We see this as an important part of our sessional interaction and your success.
A collaborative approach requires an open mind, a positive attitude and great listening skills. We are all about actions producing results. We believe clarity creates confidence, and will encourage you to speak openly, ask questions, but at the same time, be open to being challenged.
The process focuses on three stages.
Stage 1 Meet, Match, Overview and Preview
Stage 2 Build empathy, trust, goals and target setting
Stage 3 Action, review and measure

Will my mentor have experience in my industry?
We will do our best to match you with someone who understands your industry. A key criteria is you are matched with a Mentor who can solve your problem or fulfill a need. Our onboarding process will identify this upfront before any Mentor is selected.
Where will I find my Mentoring Program resources?
Your Mentor will set up a dedicated resource folder for you to access 24/ 7. Only you (Mentee) and the Mentor will have access. It is a secure shared space to upload session notes and other relevant resources that may be of help.
What makes an effective Mentor / Mentee relationship?
Open and honest communication is the most important element and the foundation of any good and long-lasting relationship.
The initial session is designed to clearly define what you need help with. Often people are not entirely sure what they want and that is perfectly normal. Sometimes what you thought was the challenge or an issue can change over time and new issues then become the key focus.
It’s also important to be upfront about your mentoring experience and provide constructive feedback to help improve your experience and your outcomes. It’s good to give feedback on how you’re tracking, you may have other things happening in your life that they are unaware of and will adjust the approach of sessions differently.
What happens after my mentoring ends?
Your mentor will discuss your needs based on the progress you have made, and the outcomes achieved. We will also ask for feedback on the partnership with your Mentor. We hope we can remain a trusted advisor and support you as needed throughout your career.
If my organisation pays for mentoring who will know about my mentoring session?
All sessions are confidential and between the Mentor and Mentee irrespective of who is funding the program. In providing feedback to your manager, we give that responsibility to you, unless we agree to do so on specific issues you want us to raise with them. Employers invest in mentoring and coaching to help develop their people, not spy on them, as there is no benefit in that.
Will the personal and professional information I share through the Mentoring Program be kept confidential?
Yes, your information is confidential. TLM will not sell, disperse or voluntarily hand over your information to a third party for any purpose, unless legally required.
You may be asked to provide a testimonial or be part of a case study and it’s your decision if you want to participate. In the event you agree ONLY your first name and industry sector will be used.
In some instances, Mentees may wish to have their details published showing both their commitment and investment, in personal and professional growth. Click here to see our Privacy Policy
