My mentor Charles really challenged the way I think, the way I work, and the way I interact with others. I gained a greater understanding of what motivates me and what I value, how I communicate, and how these things have impacted the decisions I have made in the past. Importantly, the process gave me practical methods that I implemented during an important time of transition in my career, and I have no doubt that these methods will continue to assist me in the future.

I chose to engage The Leaders Mentor because I felt that a few of my Executives had some skill gaps and our recent merger made it an opportune time to get them some mentoring help. I saw it as an opportunity for them to develop both professionally and personally, and a way for them to get some different perspectives from Mentors who have experience in other organisations and experience in actually doing what we’re asking them to do.

In a busy and changing environment, it is at times important to be able to pause and reflect. Working with Kerry, I have been able to ask, out loud, the questions that I have been asking myself. Kerry has been able to provide guidance as to what the answers to my questions might be, using real examples to help me come to my own conclusions.

I find workplace mentoring and coaching is of benefit because it is more targeted, specific and personal than other generic education methods. There’s no rule book for a lot of what we do, and the theoretical stuff isn’t as applicable as talking with a TLM mentor who understands the context, can offer advice, confirm my approach or suggest a change in direction.

The main benefits of my TLM mentoring sessions are that they expand my view and give me ideas and insights to think about and try out. I learn new techniques and have access to tools and materials that I can test to see what works with my team and what doesn’t, so I can see what I get a return on and choose what to adopt.

This is the first time a mentor has given me practical tools and activities to try and challenged me to test my barriers, assumptions and perceptions. She held me to account, called me on my crap and helped me to understand and unpack some of my negative self talk.
